Drink-driver jailed after high-speed pursuit
The issue of BMW car insurance has been highlighted after a drink-driver reached dangerous speeds on town streets and then wrote off a police patrol vehicle by smashing into it.
Police officers had tried to stop the BMW, driven by a 20-year-old Nottingham man, when they spotted it had a faulty rear light.
But instead of agreeing to speak to the officers, the young motorist put his foot down and sped off, breaking the law by driving through red lights.
The man reached speeds of up to 80 miles per hour in 30mph zones. When he finally stopped, unable to shake off the police car pursuing him, he reversed into the marked patrol vehicle.
After the first collision, the BMW pulled away slightly before reversing back again into the police car. This second crash was so severe that the BMW mounted the police car's bonnet.
Both officers in the patrol suffered back and neck injuries and one, who tried to stop the offender using CS spray, collapsed after the incident.
At court, the BMW driver was sentenced to youth custody for 10 months and banned from driving for a year after he admitted dangerous driving, drink-driving, driving without a licence and without insurance.
Because the jailed man had no BMW car insurance, it was unlikely that the police officers would receive compensation from insurers for injuries they received. In addition, there is little chance he could receive cheap car insurance quotes for the foreseeable future.
