BMW owners encouraged to fit anti-theft devices

A website which is regularly visited by prospective buyers of BMW car insurance has revealed that criminals are very choosy about the types of vehicles that they steal.

Ford Ka owners can feel safe in the knowledge that not one of the nine thousand survey respondents owning this vehicle model were car-theft victims.

However, anybody who has recently bought a Toyota Yaris has good reason to be worried, as roughly one in every 240 of these cars is expected to be stolen at some point.

A security expert pointed out that criminals are particularly prone to stealing BMWs, Jaguars and Mercedes, in large part because of the "street cred" that comes with driving these premium vehicles.

He went on to say that, "Cars are stolen for certain types of jobs, so for example, ram-raiders prefer sturdier vehicles with tow bars or oversize bumpers and they will choose dark-coloured vehicles so they blend in."

Drivers who want to minimise the risk of vehicle theft and subsequent car insurance claims, have been encouraged to fit their cars out with the latest anti-theft devices. They have also been advised against leaving their belongings in unattended vehicles.

A market research company recently revealed that the typical UK driver leaves items with a combined value of £165 lying about in their car boots and many BMW car insurance holders are unsure of whether they are covered against the theft of valuables.
