BMW owners are the worst drivers in the UK

BMW drivers, who have for a long time seen above average motor insurance quotes, have now been awarded the title of worst motorists in Britain.

Ian Vince, a writer who has co-authored a book about modern use of the roads in Britain although himself a non-driver, carried out a poll of 5,000 drivers to discover which groups are thought to make the worst motorists.

BMW owners came out top, a finding also reached by an online car insurance firm that carried out a similar study in 2005. Other high scorers in the poll included 4x4 drivers, who came second, and the third-placed white van men.

The reasons why BMW drivers are so maligned are numerous. Ian Vince mentioned some of the most common reasons that people gave for nominating them as being "unable to use signals" and "expecting others on the roads to have psychic powers."

When asked to discuss the outcome, he said: "The BMW is a smug car and perhaps there is some envy towards the drivers from those of us in our Fiestas.

"BMWs are solidly and beautifully built cars and, as a result, their drivers seem detached from the rest of the world. They seem to be insulated by all this teutonic engineering," Mr Vince reasoned.

Corrine Aldous of duck2water Car Insurance Services, experts in cheap motor insurance quotes, said: "Although I am not at all surprised that BMW drivers came top, I don't agree with Ian Vince that the rest of us are envious of their cars - I would never swap my little Mini for a Beemer."
