Motor insurance firm advises drivers to look after their cars over winter

Tesco Car Insurance is urging motorists to avoid breakdowns by keeping their cars well maintained over the winter period.

The motor insurer, which only provides online car insurance policies, has found that there is a 20% rise in car breakdowns during the cold and wet weather of the British winter. The most common breakdowns were found to be related to faulty cooling systems, tyre problems and malfunctioning batteries.

Allan Burns, head of motor insurance for Tesco, commented: "The howling wind and heavy rain presents motorists with a new set of dangers, from hazardous conditions to mechanical problems.

"We encourage all motorists to spend a little time preparing their car for the cold weather conditions and ensure that they have adequate car breakdown cover."

The company is advising drivers who want to keep their online car insurance cheap to carry out basic checks on their car during the winter. These include checking the depth of tyre tread, cleaning lights on a daily basis and ensuring the battery is in a good condition.

Also, it advises motorists to keep a warm coat and gloves in their car at all times so they don't get cold if their car does break down.
