Tyres could risk cheap motor insurance quotes

UK drivers could be risking their chance at cheap motor insurance quotes by not checking their tyres, research by Bridgestone shows.

The tyre company found that 76% of British motorists felt their tyres were in a safe condition for driving.

However, when quizzed about what the legal minimum tread depth is and what the ideal tyre pressure for their car was, a third were unable to answer.

The researchers estimate that around 65% of motorists could be driving on unsuitable tyres, risking accidents and their car insurance. It hopes that by getting motorists into its shops to get their tyres checked professionally, some accidents could be prevented and lives saved.

A spokesperson for Bridgestone said: "We have carried out tens of thousands of tyre checks and have found that only 6.5% of vehicles had all four tyres correctly inflated, with at least one in eight tyres having at least one tyre significantly under-inflated.

"Tyres are the only contact cars have with the road, making their condition vitally important. At least half the people on the road are mistaken about the safety of their vehicles and many are dangerously unaware that they are putting themselves and their passengers in danger."

He also advised drivers to check their car's tyre pressure and tread depth on a regular basis in order to prevent an accident and a likely rise in the cost of motor insurance quotes.
