Crackdown on motor insurance evaders in Haringey
Recent statistics show that one in four hit-and-run accidents in the London borough of Haringey are caused by drivers who have failed to get a motor insurance quote.
Between 2002 and 2004, 665 fatal road accidents in Haringey were caused by people who failed to stop at the scene of the crash. Whilst some of these drivers were later identified and brought to justice, some are still at large.
Transport for London (TfL) believes that many of those responsible for hit-and-run accidents do not have any car insurance and may also be breaking other driving laws.
As a result, the TfL and the Metropolitan Police Service have teamed up to crack down on illegal drivers in Haringey. They will be utilising both an advertising campaign and on-the-road enforcement to get the message through to motorists that they will not get away with it.
Police will be using an automatic number plate recognition system to catch drivers who have not bothered to get a car insurance policy.
However, they are also hoping to utilise new techniques in the future. If the proposed Road Safety Bill goes through, the police will have access to a database of all car insurance customers and be able to see if someone hasn't renewed their policy.
A spokesperson for duck2water Car Insurance Services, a company specialising in cheap motor insurance quotes, said: "It is appalling that so many people are causing hit-and-run accidents on our roads.
"I think most honest drivers would agree that any new methods to crack down on illegal drivers are most welcome."
