Costly motor insurance quotes likely for VW camper van thief

A man who crashed a camper van while drunk is likely to see a rise in his motor insurance quotes after receiving several convictions and eight penalty points on his licence.

The 22-year-old had stolen a rented Volkswagen camper van from a street in Limpsfield, Surrey, after he had been drinking lager all evening.

He did not get far before crashing into three cars, at which point a witness called the police about his erratic driving.

He had left the scene by the time police arrived, but was soon tracked down in a nearby road thanks to a leak which had left a long trail on the ground.

After being called to appear at Redhill Magistrates' Court, he explained that he remembered none of the incident since he had been so intoxicated.

He was convicted of aggravated vehicle taking, having no motor insurance, driving without a valid licence, and drink driving. He received a 36-month driving ban and eight penalty points on his licence, and was ordered to pay £70 court costs and conduct 120 hours of unpaid community work.

A spokesperson for duck2water Car Insurance Services said: "Although he managed to escape a prison sentence, it is unlikely that he will be able to evade the impact of his convictions on his motor insurance quotes."
