Valuable property putting cheap car insurance quotes at risk

Research by Prudential Car Insurance has shown that millions of UK motorists are risking their cheap car insurance quotes by leaving valuables on display in their vehicle.

A survey of 1,002 people revealed that as many as one in five motorists could be leaving property worth £150 or more in temptation's way for thieves. One in twelve admitted to leaving even more expensive items (worth in excess of £350) on show.

The most common type of property to be left in full view in cars was work clothes, which was closely followed by sports gear, paperwork, mobile phones, MP3 players and laptops.

Given these figures, it isn't surprising that more than 1.3 million thefts from cars are reported to the police each year. Those who have comprehensive motor insurance can claim the cost of their property back at the cost of their cheap car insurance quotes, motorists who only have third party cover are unlikely to get any payout.

A spokesperson for Prudential Car Insurance warned: "With the average cost of an iPod, work suit and laptop totalling around £900, drivers without adequate insurance could face a hefty bill if their car is broken into.

The cheap motor insurance company's spokesperson continued: "What is also concerning is the 6% of car owners who actually forget to lock their car at all - providing thieves with easy pickings."
