Britain's car manufacturing fourth largest in Europe
Helping keep car insurance companies in business, Britain's car manufacturing industry is the fourth largest in Europe with two million engines and one million vehicles built in the UK in 2009.
Around 30 car manufacturing sites supplying more than 100 international markets are also based in the UK which support more than 180,000 jobs in the manufacturing sector alone.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the UK is home to renowned brands with an excellent reputation for quality, design and productivity.
The supermini segment took the largest share of the UK new car market last year, with 37.2% while the diesel share rose in seven of the nine vehicle segments in 2009 compared with 2008.
While the amount of new cars being produced may have conservationists concerned, they will be happy to hear that the average new car's CO2 emissions are now just 149.5g/km compared with over 200g/km that most cars produced when CO2 data was first collected in 1997.
The surge in new cars means that not only are UK roads filled with more reliable cars that are less likely to brake down, but they are also safer cars on the road which offer more protection in case of a car crash, reducing the risk of injury and expensive car insurance claims.
