Calls for road safety action after fatal smash
Demands for road safety improvements have been made by campaigners after the death of a young driver highlighted fatal motoring dangers of a piece of highway in West Sussex, as well as the resultant cost to the public purse and car insurance of the clear-up operation.
A 19-year-old man died from his injuries in hospital after he was cut free by firefighters following a crash into a wall while driving on the B2145 Selsey road at Sidlesham.
A campaigning group called the Sidlesham Traffic Action Group (STAG) was established some years ago to press for effective road safety measures to be put in place. The group had warned serious injuries and deaths were likely if action was not taken.
Now, with the death of a young man, the worst has happened. Campaigners are calling for the authorities to act promptly to try to prevent further accidents. The B2145 is becoming notorious for speeding traffic, turning the road into a rat-run as the weight of traffic continues to grow.
If action is not taken, the risk to motorists' lives, costs to the police and authorities, as well as car insurance, would continue to rise significantly.
