The AA highlights steps to tackle dangerous driving

The AA, a leading UK motorists' organisation, is concerned about government plans to tackle dangerous drivers, although it has not highlighted any fears about car insurance costs rising.

Whitehall officials recently announced that speeding drivers would soon face a UK-wide effort to further crackdown on dangerous driving.

More fixed penalty notices were expected, leading to more points on driving licences, and in many cases drivers would be banned from the road.

Just one offence could lead to motorists receiving six penalty points and hefty fines as large as £100. Worryingly, this could lead to a driving ban should a speeding motorist be caught again - and perhaps corresponding rises in cheap car insurance.

Also, the government is proposing lowering speed limits across the country. The AA warns that many drivers could break the law unknowingly because such changes will not be effectively sign-posted.

Edmund King, president of the AA, said, "More than two thirds of drivers support the idea of higher penalties for those who break the speed limit by a considerable margin. However, the AA's main concern is that large drops in the speed limit, for example 60 to 30, are clearly signed."

More points and driving bans look certain to penalise drivers in the pocket - but interestingly, there is little official commentary being given about the impact these new road safety actions may have on car insurance costs.
