New digital cameras to cut speeding by UK motorists

Some 75 per cent of motorists break speed limits in the UK, confident they will not be snapped by the nation's many speed cameras, according to a study by a car insurance firm.

But it warned that new government proposals to establish a network of new digital speed cameras are likely to trap drivers more often.

About the middle of next year, the new technology detectors will be introduced and make average speed checks of motorists over wide areas.

At present, drivers often avoid being photographed by slowing as they drive up to fixed cameras. Once past the detection zone, they put their foot down.

But the new cameras are highly likely to see an increase in speeding motorists caught and prosecuted. Subsequently, numbers of speeders are set to fall as they are consistently penalised for driving too fast.

The study of motorists speeding habits by the Co-op highlights the importance of driving more slowly - car insurance quotes can start to rise when motorists earn speeding points on their licence.
