Thieves steal cars in 'frosting' winter crime spree
Sainsbury's Car Insurance has dreamed up a new name for a winter crime that happens when thieves steal vehicles from drivers who leave them unattended to warm up in cold conditions.
The insurer has dubbed the crime 'frosting' where motorists turn on car engines to de-ice vehicles covered in frost and snow.
Some 15,000 households could potentially have cars stolen this way during 2009 as thieves become increasingly opportunistic to profit from crime, while putting insurance for car drivers at risk.
A Sainsbury's Car Insurance spokeswoman said, "With sustained periods of low temperatures and the likelihood of having to defrost the car a couple of times a day, on the way to and from work, there is even more opportunity for the would-be car thief."
The spokeswoman warned vehicle owners that cars taken when keys were left in the ignition were unlikely to be able to claim on their car insurance policies.
