Car insurance evaders find seized car loophole
Motorists who have had their cars seized by police after having been caught driving without car insurance are using a loophole to get their vehicles back.
The seized car system is supposed to force uninsured drivers to buy motor insurance before their vehicles will be returned to them.
However, some are managing to avoid purchasing a car insurance policy yet are still getting to reclaim their car. This is because the law does not state that the motor insurance documents produced as evidence need to refer to the car that has been seized.
This loophole means that an uninsured driver will simply get a friend who has comprehensive car insurance to show their motor insurance certificate and claim the vehicle on their behalf.
Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman commented: "It's been suggested to me that one person repatriated about 60 vehicles in this particular way.
It is totally unacceptable and we have to have some conversations with the insurance industry about that to see if there's anything they could do to help us."
Uninsured driving is rife in the UK, with an estimated one in 20 drivers not bothering to get a policy, even though for many online car insurance is cheaper than ever. There have been numerous police operations to crack down on this issue in UK cities such as Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Cardiff.
Corrine Aldous, a spokesperson for online car insurance provider duck2water Car Insurance Services, commented: "The existence of this loophole undermines the police's work in tracking down uninsured drivers.
"Let's hope a resolution can be found soon."
