Child safety seats and car insurance company payout fears
Parent drivers across the UK are risking the lives of their children by breaking child car seat laws, prompting fears car insurance companies will not pay out if families are involved in road crashes.
Research has revealed a worrying trend that one in six drivers is not complying with child safety seat legislation, which could invalidate their motor insurance should they try to make a claim.
UK law requires that children riding in cars, who are less than 12 years old and shorter than 1.35m, must sit in child booster or fitted seats.
It seems parents are confused by the legislation or, according to the study, are unaware of what the law dictates about child safety in motor vehicles.
By breaking the law, as many parents are doing, child death or injury is almost twice as likely to happen. Child casualties in road smashes totalled 3,000 last year (2007).
The research, compiled from a survey of more than 2,100 adults, revealed that children are more likely to be killed or hurt when driving with friends of the family. This might make parents think carefully about who should drive their child to and from schools, parties and other locations.
The new laws requiring children to travel in car safety seats were brought into force in 2006. As a result many lives have been saved and injuries prevented, according to study organiser LV=, a car insurance company.
