Car insurance companies welcome 'road blackspot' survey results

Car insurance companies have welcomed the publication of the European Road Assessment Programme (EuroRAP) 2008 GB Tracking Survey results.

Britan's most dangerous road is a 13km stretch of the A537 between Macclesfield and Buxton. Since 2001, 43 fatal or serious collisions have occurred on the single carriageway; nearly three-quarters of them involved motorbikes.

Major findings of the survey were:

  • 30 per cent of primary roads fail to achieve a safe rating;
  • A quarter of British motorways fall outside of the safest banding;
  • The worst sections are located in Midlands and North England;
  • Three quarters of deaths or serious injuries on GB roads involve motorcyclists;
  • Extra funding would save lives.

Dr Joanne Hill who heads the Road Safety Foundation, comments that even though there has been an overall drop of 18 per cent in risk across the motorway and main road network in the past three years, the rating of motorways and the primary route network still causes major concern.

A spokesperson for Hoot car insurance company said, "Intervention must be a local government priority for funding. Road safety measures such as signposting, road markings and risk evaluation should be a priority for those roads that carry the greatest risk."
