New police clampdown on uninsured drivers

Failing to renew car insurance in good time is leading to more vehicles being stopped by the police as they work to crackdown on uninsured drivers.

Motorists who leave insurance renewals until the last minute are likely to show up on police computers as uninsured because renewals can take a few days to work through the system.

New automatic car registration plate recognition systems on police patrol vehicles allow data to be checked with the UK's Motor Insurers' Database (MID).

Because motor cover policies that expire are deleted from the MID database, cars that do not show insurance is in force lead to police officers receiving a 'no insurance'-related alert.

As a result of the improved efforts to clampdown on uninsured vehicles, numbers of drivers stopped has risen from about 78,000 in 2006 to 170,000 in 2008.

AA Insurance director Simon Douglas said, "Police are very likely to stop the motorist and if they can't provide satisfactory evidence that the car is insured, it can be confiscated."

It is believed that insured motorists should enjoy cheaper car insurance over time as the policing system works to prevent the uninsured from driving on UK roads.
