Insurance may be costly for drivers who fit snow tyres

Motorists who are keen to maintain the no claims record on their car insurance have been advised to kit their vehicles out with snow tyres, as the UK's roads are expected to become hazardous this winter.

A meteorologist from Exacta Weather, who has accurately forecast the onset of rain and snow over the last two years, is of the opinion that this winter is set to 'break all records'.

He said, "The UK is to brace itself for well below average temperatures and widespread heavy snowfall throughout winter 2011/2012, which will result in the fourth bad winter in succession for the UK, and will prove to be the worst of them all.

A well known seller of snow tyres has pointed out that these vehicle add-ons can significantly improve a car or van's handling on wet and slippery roads.

Drivers who opt against changing their tyres when the weather takes a turn for the worse are at greater risk of car accidents, which may lead to cheap car insurance claims.

However, Tyresafe has warned the nation's motorists that some car insurance companies charge higher premiums to customers who have modified their vehicles with snow tyres. This is despite the argument that insurers shouldn't be allowed to discourage drivers from making their vehicles safer.
