Online car insurance firm finds 1 in 3 motorists drives carelessly
An online car insurance provider has discovered that more than one in three UK motorists drives carelessly, risking their cheap motor insurance rates.
Direct Line carried out a survey of 11,000 drivers in order to find out how their driving behaviour affects their risk of having an accident. The well-known firm, which specialises in low cost online car insurance quotes, found that 37% of motorists admit to one or more types of careless driving.
It found that the most common fault is failing to indicate when changing lanes - which 32% of drivers admit to - whilst other mistakes included failing to stop for pedestrian crossings and using hand-held mobile phones while behind the wheel.
Emma Hoyler of the online motor insurance specialists at Direct Line said: "Careless driving is a major cause of accidents - and aside from the increased risk of causing a crash, a careless driving offence carries severe penalties."
She went on: "We are reminding motorists to take care, keep their full concentration on their driving and brush up on the rules as detailed in the Highway Code."
