Online car insurance company finds that uninsured driver problem could worsen

A survey carried out by an online car insurance firm has found that over a million UK drivers would consider driving while uninsured.

Sainsbury's Bank found that just over 480,000 people currently admit to having driven without motor insurance in the last year and many more would be likely to commit the offence if their motoring bills increase.

It seems probable that some of these motorists will soon be taking to the roads without getting a motor insurance policy as the online car insurance company also found that over the last year, the cost of owning and driving a car has gone up by 7.2%.

It is a combination of factors that is pushing the cost of motoring up, including more expensive car insurance premiums and costlier fuel. Sainsbury's Bank recommends that drivers who want to cut their costs may benefit by searching around for a cheap online car insurance deal or trading in their car for a less powerful model.

Richard Clark, manager of Sainsbury's car insurance, said: "Uninsured motorists are a serious problem and we estimate that it adds over 6.5% to premiums. It's not only dangerous, but it's also unfair to expect honest drivers to pick up the tab."

In addition, the motor insurance provider found that it is young drivers who are most likely to be lured into uninsured driving, although motorists of all ages admitted to being tempted.
