10 arrested over car insurance fraud
10 people from Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire have been arrested after police discovered their involvement in a motor insurance scam.
The scam is thought to be a "cash for crash" scheme in which the fraudsters intentionally cause accidents with innocent drivers, who are then forced to make a claim on their cheap car insurance policy.
In the operation, codenamed Operation Exhort, police raided four homes across St Albans, Reading, Luton and Chalton where they seized a total of £1m in assets. Vehicles, documentation and cash are amongst the evidence taken for further examination by motor insurance fraud specialists.
The Insurance Fraud Bureau is currently investigating the financial aspects of this case as the suspects are thought to have benefited quite considerably from the scam.
Corrine Aldous of duck2water Car Insurance Services said: "It is good to hear the police are cracking down on scams like this.
"Not only does this type of fraud mean that the innocent people involved in the accidents lose their cheap car insurance rate, but it actually puts up the cost of motor insurance for us all."
