Jail threat for fraudsters
Car insurance fraudsters have been warned by a judge that they face jail after faking a crash to cash in on an insurance payout.
Three people - a married couple and another man - were found guilty by a Greater Manchester jury after denying conspiracy to defraud.
The couple had been joint directors of a Bolton company that hires cars to motorists involved in accidents. They are due to be sentenced in the spring.
They had teamed up with another couple from Farnworth to fake a crash between three cars that would have netted them more than £80,000. But when the alleged smash was investigated, a vehicle examiner cast doubt on the motorists' story.
Once the story was rumbled by investigating firm Zurich, which provides insurance for car drivers, the Farnworth couple decided to give evidence against the other three people.
After the trial, a spokesman for car insurance firm Zurich said, "This should act as a deterrent to other would-be fraudsters. We have no sympathy for these people."
