Insurance companies take a dim view of drug drivers

Masses of drivers have risked the invalidation of their car insurance, plus other people's lives, by taking to the British roads while under the influence of illegal substances.

Some 35% of people questioned by a company who sell cheap car insurance said that they had driven after smoking an illegal drug during the past 12 months.

It would seem that more needs to be done to educate the public about the mind-altering effects of certain drugs, as one third of the users who had taken to the road under the influence said that they were either "very safe" or "quite safe".

However, a number of drug takers stated that they had gone over the speed limit after the effects of an illegal drug had taken hold. Some individuals had even been involved in car crashes after inhaling large quantities of illegal drugs as smoke.

An insurance expert said, "The dangers of drug drivers on our roads are becoming increasingly apparent, with thousands admitting they have been involved in an accident while high or stoned.

"The effects of drugs can often leave people feeling overly confident or extremely relaxed, both of which are known to lead to dangerous driving behaviours.

"We strongly support the Department for Transport's (DfT) decision to clamp down on drug driving and would welcome further investment in effective roadside drug tests."

People previously given a drug-driving conviction have not only put their life and the lives of others at risk but also had great difficulty obtaining affordable car insurance, even from online providers.
