Light fitting may be of benefit to insurance customers

It is hoped that there will be a reduction in the number of night-time road accidents and car insurance claims after the installation of additional street lights in Northamptonshire.

The government is set to spend £132m on new and upgraded lights, which may save the lives of road users in the Midlands.

The Private Finance Initiative funds will even pay for the development of a centrally controlled management system to alert the relevant authorities to any lighting problems.

The Local and Regional Transport Minister said, "Good street lighting is vitally important in cutting road accidents. Updating lights which are long past their best before date will also reduce energy consumption.

"That is why, despite current financial constraints, we have made over £132 million available to Northamptonshire for this important scheme."

Motorists have also been reminded that night driving forms a major element of most advanced driving courses. People who enrol on such programmes may feel safer behind the wheel and stand an improved chance of obtaining cheap car insurance.

Comedy star Rowan Atkinson might have wished that he'd enrolled on such a programme prior to crashing his McLaren F1 on the roads near his Northamptonshire home recently. It is unknown whether he made a car insurance claim for damage done to his vehicle.
