Scottish rally driver has no need for online car insurance for 6 months

A driver from Scotland will not need to find a cheap online car insurance deal for at least six months following a conviction for driving at over 100 mph on a 60 mph road.

Neale Dougan, 42, is an amateur rally driver but was travelling on a public road between Inverness and Perth when he was caught doing 104 mph, a speed which was described by the Sheriff as "outrageously high."

Mr Dougan, who runs a Saab dealership, claimed that a driving ban would be very detrimental to his work.

Mr Whiteford, defending, explained: "He is the principal shareholder and managing director of County Saab.

"The loss of his driving licence would have serious repercussions, not only for him, but also for the company and 52 employees and support staff who rely heavily on him."

However, Sheriff Michael Fletcher felt that the speed Mr Dougan had driven at warranted a serious punishment and handed over a six month ban and a £500 fine.

This is not the first time Mr Dougan has been in trouble with the law. In 2000, he received a 15 month driving ban for driving offences.

Corrine Aldous of duck2water Car Insurance Services said: "I think Mr Dougan is going to struggle to find a low cost online car insurance premium when he is allowed to drive again.

"With that record, it seems likely that most motor insurance companies will consider him to be quite a high risk."
