Range Rover burnt for £25000 insurance payout

A Scottish man was jailed after setting light to a Range Rover to try to help the vehicle owner cash in on a car insurance payout worth many thousands of pounds

But the Range Rover's owner, who dreamed up the scam, escaped a prison sentence, receiving a 240-hour community service order for his role in the arson and con.

The owner was a businessman in his late 30s. He admitted trying to defraud the firm that provided insurance for the car. He falsely claimed that the four-wheel-drive vehicle had been stolen from outside his home.

The Range Rover had developed faults soon after buying it. As a result, the owner accepted a criminal offer to make his problem "disappear", the court was told.

A packet of money containing a few hundred pounds was left on a seat of the vehicle as payment for the person who drove away - and burnt - the Range Rover.

What seemed like a cheap way to cash in on insurance turned out to be an expensive crime for the perpetrators. The man who set light to the vehicle was jailed for eight months, a sentence that ran concurrently with another offence that had been imposed earlier at a different Scottish court.

After the vehicle was found burnt out, the car insurance company initially settled the claim, paying out about £25000. However, the vehicle owner subsequently repaid this amount.
