Demise of the asbo brings hope for cheaper premiums

Official figures released yesterday have shown a sharp drop in the number of new asbos being awarded to offenders. Many of these anti-social behaviour orders have been awarded to young joy-riders without car insurance who steal cars and then write them off in needless car accidents.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the introduction of asbos, but instead of being a negative issue, the award of such a punishment soon became seen as a ‘badge of honour' amongst ranks of young offenders.

Shockingly, after one annual party conference, it was revealed that Labour local authority leaders had compared numbers of asbo awards for their respective constituencies with the highest number of awards being the winner. Surely having fewest would have been the better deal.

Newly released figures show a 34% drop of new orders being awarded. Home secretary, Jacqui Smith spoke of alternative measures to encourage "early intervention" of offender's bad behaviour. Parenting orders, support orders and acceptable behaviour contracts have been put forward as ways to prevent young people from offending.

It is hopeful that a reduction in young people's offending could reduce the number of car accidents in high car crime areas and this, in turn, might help reduce the cost of car insurance premiums.
