Police driver of high-speed car faces car insurance probe

Two police officers, who drove away a high-performance car which they had confiscated from a suspected drink-driver then crashed it, are likely to have problems obtaining personal car insurance if one or both are convicted of a motoring offence.

The incident at Hales Barns, Greater Manchester, involved a Mitsubishi Lancer, which the officers had seen being driven erratically and its driver was subsequently stopped and arrested.

Usually, police procedure is for a separate recovery team to move a vehicle after a driver's arrest but for some reason an officer got behind the wheel.

While the car was being driven from the scene, it went across a grass verge, into a front garden then through a fence before ending on its side. One of the two police officers inside it suffered from minor injuries.

Trafford police divisional commander Ch Supt Mark Roberts assured the local community that the incident would be rigorously investigated and he apologised to them for any inconvenience.

The property owners affected may be able to claim compensation for damage caused by the car crash as may the owner of the Mitsubishi, who will also have to explain the unusual circumstances to his car insurance company.
