More than 100 regulations may soon be scrapped

The Department for Transport ‘Red Tape Challenge' has recommended the scrapping of more than a hundred motoring regulations which range from proving a motorist has car insurance before they apply for road tax to banning the requirement to carry a paper driving licence at all times.

This is designed the make the life of car buyers easier as the government-wide initiative looks to cut the unnecessary and burdensome rules which motorists have to face.

Since road users will no longer have to prove they have insurance, for car owners it means that 600,000 more people will now be able to purchase their tax online.

This is now possible thanks to the Continuous Insurance Enforcement rules which mean that the DVLA will be able to compare insurance records through the Motor Insurance Database.

Also, the Department for Transport is trying to do away with the need for drivers to hold a certificate of motor insurance.

The Transport Secretary is in support of the new initiative, commenting that numerous bits of paper should not be necessary to prove car insurance purchase and since we are now living in a digital age we should embrace it.

Any changes to the paper licensing system will reportedly not be taking place until 2015.
