High number of UK drivers have no car insurance

A report published by the Motors Insurers' Bureau (MIB) has discovered that nearly a third of motorists in certain areas of the UK are failing to take out a car insurance quote. This is despite the fact that the Bureau has a record of every uninsured car in the country.

The four areas in which drivers are apparently most negligent when it comes to being insured, are Birmingham, Essex, Manchester, and West Yorkshire. The total number of uninsured drivers in Britain, according to the report, is 1.4 million.

These uninsured drivers are responsible for 23,000 injuries on the roads as well as 160 deaths, some involving holders of young driver insurance. And to add to the problems these drivers cause for UK road users, who do pay for car insurance, they add, on average, £30 to every insurance premium quote.

These statistics are being viewed as completely unacceptable by the Motor Insurers' Bureau which says it is taking whatever steps are necessary in order to tackle the problem.

The high prices given in car insurance quotes are the main reason cited as to why these drivers drive while uninsured. The Office of Fair Trading is investigating the spiralling costs and if it finds pricing to be unfair it says measures will be taken to curb the cost of motor cover.
