Live in London? Don't bank on passing your driving test first time

Before you even think about getting a car insurance quote, it is necessary to first pass your driving test. However, for those driving test applicants living in London, it is not always a reality that is likely to immediately transpire.

This is because new research from moneysupermarket shows that aspiring drivers in the capital are those most likely to fail at the first time of asking (41 percent). For these people, the excitement of passing their test and looking for a cheap car insurance quote will be put on hold until at least the second time of asking.

And it seems that men are more likely than women to pass first time (52 percent), with women (42 percent) having to wait that little bit longer before popping open that celebratory champagne and going online to find the cheap motor insurance that is right for them.

Paul Gerard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket, comments, "Learning to drive can be a costly affair, and with 53 per cent of people taking their test more than once, finally losing those L-plates doesn't come cheap, Unsurprisingly, twenty-something motorists are the least likely to pass their test on the first go, while those over 60 were more likely to get top marks with the test examiner first time round."

He added some useful advice for finding a first cheap car insurance quote, saying "Younger drivers eager to get behind the wheel this summer may be shocked by how expensive their insurance premiums are. I advise taking a Pass Plus course, adding an older driver to your policy and consider buying an older car which may be easier to insure. Considering a higher excess on your policy will also keep your premium down."
