Car insurance quote could be higher after drive-eating

There are many reasons why motorists have to pay higher car insurance quotes but a significant cause is because they are caught eating behind the wheel.

A leading UK car insurance company has discovered that out of 1,200 of their online customers more than 35% of motorists admit to this dangerous habit.

The survey also attests that at least a quarter of this 35% eat whilst driving on a regular basis – 11% of these motorists eat their breakfast while they are travelling in their car.

The dangers of this activity are substantial as motorists can become easily distracted, as well as not having both of their hands on the wheel. For these reasons and many others it may be of little surprise to discover that eating whilst behind the wheel can carry a punishment of up to nine points on a licence as well as a fine for driving without due care and attention.

A spokesperson for the insurer who carried out the survey stated that there is no excuse for eating while driving, even when the motorist is in a hurry to get to their destination. Motorists need to ensure that they are 100% focused on the road at all times when driving, not only to avoid a high car insurance premium but also for their own and other road users' safety.

This hazardous behaviour can cause a driver to become distracted and result in accidents on the road. Both having an accident which the motorist is liable for and the possible conviction for the offence could affect future car insurance quotes.
