UK Government criticised in call for MOT reminder scheme
A government plan to increase MOT fees for the fifth consecutive year has led to calls for a simple vehicle test reminder service to be established - just like car insurance quote renewals.
Motorists risk invalidating insurance policies if they drive on British roads without valid MOT certificates - yet many forget to book tests.
A survey by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) shows that the vast majority of motorists would support an MOT reminder scheme.
The IAM is critical of the UK government and the MOT monitoring service run by VOSA - the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency - pointing out that tests are not cheap and no official group or government-run agency bothers to remind drivers when their MOTs are due to expire.
IAM policy and research director Neil Greig said, "Motorists have faced constant test fee increases for the past five years, each one above inflation, but they have not seen much improvement in the service."
Sending out simple MOT reminders - just like when car insurance quotes are issued by motor cover insurers at renewal times - would reduce the number of motorists driving on British roads in potentially unsafe cars and other vehicles.
