Elderly drivers get cheaper car insurance quotes

Age brings with it cheaper car insurance quotes, according to research by Moneysupermarket.com.

The online car insurance quote service revealed that whilst the average car insurance quote for a 35-year-old is £334, someone twice that age would be enjoying a premium of almost £100 less, at £245.

The researchers believe that the difference in motor insurance quotes is down to the fact that even though elderly drivers are more likely to have health complaints, they generally have a much lower annual mileage and make cheaper claims on their car insurance policy.

A spokesperson for Moneysupermarket.com discussed the results, saying: "Clearly insurers feel that people in their 20s and 30s are a far greater risk than those in their 60s or 70s. This is because they tend to drive more frequently on the road and at busier times. Insurers also deem young drivers as more aggressive on the road, in comparison."

He went on to urge motorists to get a range of car insurance quotes in order to take advantage of the best deals available, commenting: "For example, a 20-year-old renewing their annual insurance until they are 25 would use five different insurers to save the greatest amount of money."
