Woman killed by driver who sent texts at wheel
A media spotlight has been shone on car insurance quotes for motorists caught texting while behind the wheel after a driver who sent phone texts before killing a woman in a crash was jailed.
The driver, also a woman, was said to have sent 21 text messages and made calls to friends as she drove towards Oxford along the A40 before hitting the dead woman's car at about 70 mph.
The judge at her trial sentenced her to 21 months in prison and banned her from driving for three years. She had denied causing death by dangerous driving.
The crash happened in November 2007. The other female motorist had stopped after her car tyre was punctured. Her car was forced off the road and she suffered a fatal brain injury in the smash.
Such a tragic case at least partly explains why car insurance quotes can be much higher for motorists convicted of offences such as mobile phone texting while driving.
