Motorists warned about Christmas car break-ins

Car insurance quotes could rise next year as the result of a spate of holiday season vehicle break-ins highlighted by the AA, the UK's leading motorists' organisation.

Christmas shopping time is a bonanza period for thieves who smash their way into cars when they can see gifts and sale bargains left on display on seats.

Police crime figures reveal cars are broken into every 13 seconds on average in this country, and claims on policies increase 10% during December - which can increase the cost of cheap car insurance.

The AA - which has about 15 million members - is advising festive shoppers to be more careful with their purchases. Placing shopping out of sight in a covered boot would be wiser.

Simon Douglas, director at AA Insurance, said hiding shopping was the best step to take to avoid falling victim to so-called "Grinch-style thieves who will not hesitate to steal your Christmas."

He said, "We're urging shoppers to be extra vigilant when doing last minute shopping to make sure they are not inviting thieves, for whom the season is about anything but goodwill."

He suggested that policyholders might consider obtaining car insurance quotes that provided higher levels of cover for personal belongings to ensure they were better covered at this more risky time of the year.
