Car insurance rates and tough penalties for killer drivers

The issue of finding a good car insurance rate will be negated for people who kill by driving dangerously when new sentencing guidelines are introduced.

A driver who causes death whilst using a mobile phone, texting or reading texts should receive up to seven years in prison, according to the Sentencing Guidelines Council.

Motorists who drive with dangerous intent or with high levels of drugs/alcohol and are subsequently involved in a fatal accident will face at least seven-years in prison.

In extreme cases such as failure to stop or a history of motoring offences the driver could receive a 14-year term.

Death caused by a momentary lapse of concentration could be given a community service sentence, but careless driving involving fatality could receive up to three years in prison.

A death caused whilst driving without motor insurance or whilst unlicensed or disqualified will carry a maximum two year term.

A spokesperson for Brake road safety action group said, "While we welcome the fact that more drivers who commit offences and kill will hopefully now be imprisoned, the law is still woefully lenient to tackle drivers who kill and maim through their own actions with catastrophic consequences for families."

A spokesperson for car insurance rate specialist, duck2water said, "Drivers who kill are the scourge of the roads, tougher sentencing should be a priority."
