New traffic signs to improve road safety

A major review of UK road signs just announced could help cut the cost of car insurance rates, according to the British government.

The review has been billed as the most significant since the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals carried out 40 years ago in 1968.

Rosie Winterton, the government's transport minister, is calling on all road users and interested groups to participate in the planned consultation.

She believes road organisations and highway authorities, as well as pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, could now play their part to improve traffic signs, to keep streets uncluttered by poor signage, and to ensure traffic can move more safely and efficiently.

Edmund King, president of the AA motoring organisation, said, "Clear, concise, relevant road signs help reduce congestion, CO2, frustration and accidents. Confusing signs do the opposite so we welcome a root and branch review of the UK's traffic signing system."

An action plan to start the review and associated consultation is due to be announced by the middle of next year, it was reported.

Traffic sign improvements could help force down the cost of car insurance rates provided the proposed overhaul of traffic signs proves to help cut accident numbers and improve general road safety.
