Online car insurance firm promotes car sharing

An online car insurance company is encouraging people to go green by taking part in car sharing initiatives.

Yesinsurance is promoting car sharing by providing visitors to its online car insurance site with a set of links to organisations like LiftShare and Freewheelers.

A spokesperson for the motor insurance company commented: "The latest figures from Defra show that road transport accounts for 22% of the UK's CO2 emissions and it is vitally important that moves are made to reduce this through better use of vehicles.

"Research conducted by the Department of Transport in 2005 indicates that 61% of cars on the road do not carry any passengers. Where commuting was concerned, the figure was even higher, at 85%.

"Lift sharing is designed to help reduce these figures."

The online car insurance quote provider also pointed out that taking part in a car sharing initiative should not affect a driver's motor insurance, as long as they do not profit from taking passengers.
