More than 450 Rochdale motorists found to be evading car tax
Drivers in Rochdale who have been caught driving without tax, many of whom had not bothered to get a motor insurance quote either, have paid more than £40,000 in fines in just three months.
Number plate recognition technology was employed to help the DVLA identify cars that were being driven untaxed. These cars were then clamped or impounded and owners informed that they must pay a fine plus costs to get them back. Motorists who failed to claim their car within seven days saw their cars scrapped.
Bethan Beasley of the DVLA commented: "The success of the Rochdale operation marks a new chapter in our fight against car tax evasion. We are able to track down, impound and potentially crush untaxed vehicles quicker than ever before."
The 462 motorists caught with untaxed cars in Rochdale were part of a wider crackdown which saw over 4,000 drivers across the UK lose their cars. Over 1,000 cars were seized in Croydon alone, whilst Reading, Sheffield and Oldbury also had high levels of car tax evasion.
The minimum fine for having an invalid tax disc is £80 but motorists who fail to pay and do not pick their car up immediately will have to pay an extra £15 for every day their car is impounded. They may also face additional fines if they have committed other motoring offences, such as having no car insurance.
Corrine Aldous of duck2water Car Insurance Services, a company specialising in cheap motor insurance quotes, said: "These motorists are certainly paying the price for not having up-to-date car tax. Hopefully they won't make the same mistake again."
