UK motorists are unaware of many road signs
A new study undertaken by an oil company has revealed the shocking news that more than two thirds of the British public are confused by road signs.
This is worrying since ignorance toward road signs could bring a swift end to cheap car insurance as UK drivers may be more likely to have a road accident after ignoring or misunderstanding a warning.
According to the research one in three drivers are so confused by road signs that they opt to simply follow the car in front of them instead of using signage. Plus, more than half of road users admit they ignore road signs from time to time, with 20% of drivers saying that they never take notice of road signs.
When shown a "Give Way" sign 50% of drivers did not understand what it meant, and one in 20 reportedly believe that they are supposed to open their window in order to listen out for oncoming traffic.
Keeping up with road signs from the Highway Code is essential to maintaining safety on UK roads, as well as keeping car insurance costs low.
A motoring expert stated, "Signs are in place not only to help motorists navigate the road, but also for safety, and not taking the time to learn the most basic of instructions is lazy and irresponsible."
