Cheap car insurance affected if motorists neglect an eye exam

New research conducted by a car insurance company has revealed that half of motorists on the roads admit that their eyesight has deteriorated since passing their practical driving test.

As drivers get older they are supposed to be able to enjoy perks such as cheap car insurance due to their experience, but more and more people are apparently having problems seeing adequately while on the road.

The study showed that 8% of motorists are unable to read a road sign from 20 metres away, which would cause an automatic failure if this happened during a driving test. Also 42% of motorists say they need to slow down or squint to read signs while 28% need to ask passengers of the car to read out a sign for them.

Driving with poor eyesight is not only likely to land motorists a high price car insurance quote and potentially loss of licence if they are involved in a car accident, but it also endangers lives of other drivers on the roads. In 2009 more than 4,000 motorists were banned from the roads because of their failing eyesight.

If a motorist thinks they might have an issue with their eyesight then it is imperative they book an eye examination test as soon as possible.

On average motorists generally wait three years to check their eyes, though 10% admitted to not having had a sight test in a decade. Of the people questioned for the research 45% said that they would continue driving even if they had doubts about being able to see properly.

Motorists who require spectacles also need to ensure that they have them on at all times when behind the wheel. In order for drivers to ensure that they keep their cheap car insurance as well as maintaining their own safety, it is strongly recommended that they book an eye exam if they have any doubts or have not had a check-up for a couple of years.
