Deer accidents prompt safety campaign
Collisions with deer are threatening lives - and the cost of cheap car insurance - in Scotland, prompting the launch of a road safety initiative to warn motorists about the dangers.
Crashes involving deer total about 10,000 annually, leading to the deaths of about three people every year on Scottish roads as well as many serious injuries.
Two official organisations are spearheading a campaigning drive to raise awareness at this time of year among drivers across the country to save lives - and help keep down the cost of insurance for cars.
The DCS (Deer Commission for Scotland) and Transport Scotland warn that many deer end up in accidents as they wander across rural and suburban roads.
A DCS spokesman said. "Juvenile roe deer are a higher risk on the roads at this time of year as their mothers are about to give birth, leaving one-year-olds to find their own way for the first time."
Accidents involving deer are not reportable and deer collisions are feared to total as much as 50,000 per year. The effect on drivers' cheap car insurance can be considerable because damage, compensation and any legal liabilities can cost thousands of pounds.
