Does the hunt for cheap car insurance stop car ownership?
Despite having to hunt around for a decent mechanic and cheap car insurance, according to a report by the RAC, owning a car improves your quality of life by a third.
The report, entitled Travel Demand and its Causes, highlights that 60 percent of the English population live in car orientated sub-urban or rural areas, and calls for appropriate, car-inclusive planning to acknowledge this.
At present, three out of four families have a car, with private transport costs of over £50 per week. This is nine times the amount spent per week on public transport.
In households with no private car, on average 15 trips are made per week. Where a car is available this increases to 20 trips, and 22 trips per week where there is more than one vehicle.
Non-drivers get more lifts from car owning friends or relatives than use public transport, thus showing that the car is an important mode of transport even for non-drivers.
Sheila Rainger, Head of Campaigns for the RAC Foundation said "The private car has fundamentally changed the way in which people live, making broader education and social activities, and better employment opportunities, available to the many not the few.
"The genie of travel demand cannot be put back into the bottle. The quality of life benefits of increased travel must not be overlooked when it comes to forecasting demand and planning our future road and transport network."
A spokesperson for duck2water, cheap car insurance provider, commented, "The government needs to take note; the high cost of road tax and fuel has not stopped the UK public from driving their cars. This should be a wake up call for public transport providers."
