Survey shows motorists go slow

Along with shopping around for cheap car insurance, there is another way to keep your motoring costs down. Drive Slower!

Traffic information service KeepMoving.co.uk's latest sampling of speeds on Britain's busiest motorways has revealed an average lower speed for the first part of June when compared with the same period last year.

Free-flowing traffic speeds on the M6 from Birmingham to Carlisle have decreased by 0.9%, and the M25 has seen a 0.3% decrease. Although the figures appear small, they are consistent with a UK wide cross-section of motorists who are altering their speed in a bid to save fuel.

The study suggests that fewer cars are on British roads as during the first half of June 2008, average speeds on all roads were up by 12% when compared with May 2008.

These findings would imply that the rise in fuel prices is affecting driver behaviour.

A spokesperson for KeepMoving.co.uk said, "Although the actual quantity of vehicles using the roads is likely to have only slightly decreased, the effect in terms of traffic problems is quite significant." A duck2water spokesperson said, "As a provider of cheap car insurance we are always encouraged to hear reports of fewer traffic problems on British roads. We would advise our customers that a cruising speed of between 55-65mph is the most fuel efficient and, therefore cost effective, way to drive."
