Forget the highway code, you can forget cheap cover

Once again a survey has shown that British drivers are putting their safety at risk, and jeopardising their chances of getting cheap car insurance, by failing to remember the Highway Code.

Research carried out by a well-known comparison website revealed that 65% of the motorists polled could not recognise 'no vehicles' signage and 62% failed to identify the sign for a 30mph speed limit area.

When asked to identify five Highway Code rules, only 3% were able.

Worryingly, only 23% of drivers considered looking out for pedestrians to be their main priority when reversing into a side road, while many drivers did not fully know the right method for making a u-turn.

The head of motor insurance at the comparison website said, "Motorists are required by law to be able to recognise and adhere to the rules of the Highway Code."

"Any motorist found to be flouting the rules could be fined, given penalty points on their licence - or worse still, disqualified from driving altogether and sent to prison."

A spokesperson for duck2water, specialist providers of cheap car insurance, said, "Being knowledgeable about road regulations is one of the major factors in staying safe and accident-free on the roads. This in turn will help you keep up your no-claim bonus and this will be reflected in a better price for your car insurance quote when it is time for renewal."
