Cheap policies could become more common
Road safety campaigners often remind us that cheap car insurance will be more common if road traffic accidents are reduced.
The first road death statistics to be revealed in 2009 are from the Thames Valley. The provisional figure, due to ongoing coroner investigations, reveals that 95 people were killed on the region's roads in 2008. This represents a 20 per cent reduction on 2007 figures, and 34 per cent lower than 2006.
This is the lowest road fatality figure on record. In 1990, Thames Valley road traffic accidents claimed 192 lives and in 2000, there were 173 deaths.
Sue Brown, from Buckinghamshire County Council and chairman of the Safer Roads Partnership Board said, "The impact of a fatal crash cannot be underestimated.
"To have witnessed the reductions in road deaths that we have seen, in the last year in particular, marks a dramatic change on our roads.
"The challenge that lies ahead is maintaining those reductions and aiming to go further."
A spokesperson for duck2water said, "Cheap car insurance policies could possibly become more common if these trends continue."
