Car insurance news - UK losing record for safest roads in Europe

Britons looking for cheap car insurance could face higher motor cover premiums because the UK is slipping down the European road safety league table.

About ten years ago, Great Britain enjoyed the best road safety record on the continent. However, now it is failing to achieve a European Union (EU) target to halve road deaths by 2010.

The UK has cut road fatalities by less than 15% while France, Portugal and Luxembourg have so far achieved a reduction of around 40%.

Campaigns running in other European countries that target improved road safety are apparently proving to be more effective and focused than those running in the UK.

Britain's Department for Transport (DfT) cited excuses, claiming other countries have been able to achieve better results because they have only just introduced speed cameras while the UK has been using them for years.

But the fact remains that a decade ago, Britain had a lower number of road deaths per 100,000 of the population than anywhere in Europe. Now, the UK is well down the table.

Such bad news is likely to be analysed and considered by motor insurers and cheap car insurance could be in shorter supply in the UK until the road safety trend is reversed.
