Cheap car insurance firm discovers messy motorists

A cheap car insurance firm has revealed that millions of motorists in the UK maintain their vehicles so badly that they could be at risk of having an accident.

Regularly checking the condition of your car is a vital part of keeping it running safely but, according to LV=, as many as 24 million of us fail to do that.

A survey by the motor insurance company found that 55% would not think about checking that their windscreen was clean before heading out in their car, whilst 84% wouldn't bother to look at the windscreen wash levels.

A spokesperson for LV= said: "Making sure that your windscreen, lights and mirrors are clean before setting off on a journey should be second nature to motorists, but our research shows that this doesn't appear to be the case despite it being a legal requirement.

The cheap car insurance provider also found that motorists' failure to clean the outside of their cars is extended to the interior. A total 13% of drivers admitted that they felt embarrassed by the dirty and cluttered state of their vehicle, with common in-car "extras" including phone chargers, CDs, maps, clothes and magazines.

The spokesperson continued: "Keeping loose items in the car could lead to avoidable accidents such as rubbish getting trapped under the pedals whilst you are driving. Not to mention the fact that items such as mp3 players, clothes and sunglasses may attract all sorts of unwanted attention that could put your car at risk of theft.

"Cleaning out your car frequently is not only easier on the eye, but safer and easier on the pocket too," she concluded.
