Police advise motorists not to risk cheap quotes

Police have warned that certain winter-related bad driving habits could lead to drivers jeopardising the chances of receiving cheap car insurance.

Inspector Ian Joseph told the Redditch Standard of one case he knew of where a driver had risked his chances of receiving a cheap car insurance quote, "We had a cold snap at the end of October last year and on the very first morning, had a report of a Freelander being stolen from outside a house in Redditch while the owner left it with the engine running to warm-up," he said.

He added, "We had similar thefts reported to us over the winter months, and although we're talking small numbers here, we consider that even one theft of this nature is one too many as it can be avoided so easily."

Instead, he said, motorists should "allow a little extra time on frosty mornings... to stay" with their cars while the motor runs and the engine warms up.

He also stated that leaving the car to warm up could have long term consequences on a driver's chances of receiving cheap car insurance. "Car theft is inconvenient at any time but motorists should also be aware that many insurance companies will not pay out if the vehicle has been left running with the keys in the ignition," he said.

A spokesperson from Duck2Water, the cheap motor insurance quote specialists, commented, "No matter the temptation, leaving a car unattended with the motor running can be like an open invite to thieves and should never be considered."
